Sandy Hook & Other Stories: Reaping What We Sow

I’m not talking politically, I’m not talking about the result of the November sixth election;  I am saying that something has gone wrong in America and that we have turned our back on God.

I mean, millions of people have decided that God doesn’t exist, or he’s irrelevant to me and we have killed fifty-four million babies and the institution of marriage is right on the verge of a complete redefinition.  Believe me, that is going to have consequences too.

It’s human nature to try and seek explanation for events we cannot possibly understand. From the moment the news vans pulled up outside Sandy Hook Elementary school on Friday morning, desperation driven in part by horror, in part by the news networks desire to be the first to the details, prompted all manner of misinformation to be broadcast.

The Daily Mail reported there were two killers on the loose in the school. CNN claimed the killer was Ryan Lanza. Or Ryan Lanza was dead.

Anita Sarkeesian: Just Another Victim?

I first became conscious that my opinions and values prompted others to categorise me as a feminist in my mid-twenties. I paid it no more mind than I had the continual references to my ‘tomboyish-ness’ when I was growing up . If my choice of clothing and compulsion to collect vinyl, play videogames and write peculiar stories caused others to tag me thusly, I paid it no mind.

Lately, I’m beginning to feel that is a luxury I can no longer afford.

Ki Suk Han: The Privilege Of The Few

If you don’t have an opinion on the New York Post’s decision to run this image of Ki Suk Han on their front page last Tuesday, you almost certainly have something to say about R. Umar Abbasi’s decision to take it in the first place.

Pussy Riot: Better Parenting Through Imprisonment

Image: Maxim Shemetov/Reuters.

If we accepted Vladimir Putin’s suggestion that Pussy Riot’s musical protesterode[d] Russia’s moral foundation and undermine[d] the country“, it would be pertinent to ask how depriving two kids of contact with their mothers at a crucial point in their development could possibly be constructive in this regard.

However, since most sane people would reject that assertion out of hand, let’s not waste time arguing the point. It’s moot now anyway, since Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova are being shipped off to a prison colony in the Russian hinterland where they will spend their days sewing prison uniforms and learning how to fight murderers.

Which will, of course, benefit Russia’s moral foundation for generations to come.

Jimmy Savile: Keep Quiet & Carry On

Image: @SOTCAA.

Without making assumptions of guilt or innocence, the response of a sizeable minority of people towards the recent allegations against Jimmy Savile is making it increasingly clear to me how this kind of thing might have gone unchecked for so long.

I realise it must be horrendous for his family, but the level of anger directed towards the women claiming he assaulted them – the preferred option apparently to “let him Rest In Peace” – frightens me.

I thought we’d made some progress since the 70’s. Obviously not.

Parenting 101: Don’t Encourage Blokes To Stalk Your Daughter. Duh!

Jesus. And I thought my Dad’s habit of keeping an emergency cake in his top pocket was embarrassing. Image: salon.com.

What would you do if found out your daughter was gay and had married her civil partner? Would you:

Leon Knight: Hashtag Hate Crime

Involuntary writing hiatus over, I return to the internet only to find that yet another misogynist has broken loose from his moorings and started spraying Twitter with his own brand of vigilante DVT.  On the plus side, it’s a footballer this time, so there will be no crushing fall from grace and embarrassment at our own misplaced faith.

Alright, maybe a bit.

America’s Oxymoron Sets Off UK Crap-O-Meter. No One Killed.

Image via wired.com.

British people realised some time ago that guns in the wrong hands are dangerous. Over the last few decades, we’ve made it our business to insist that successive governments gradually relegate those who enjoy killing things for fun to parts of the island that no one really cares about or would think to visit.

Mainly sink estates in London, Birmingham and Manchester and the countryside.

Lady Gaga & The Furry Flip Flop Of Doom

That’s a real dog. Not a handbag. Although at this point, it would pay to be cautious. Image via tumblr.

Anti-fur campaigner Lady Gaga:

I really loved that one in particular because I thought it was a commentary on not wearing fur, ’cause I hate fur and I don’t wear fur.

PETA baiter Lady Gaga:

For those press and such who are writing about whether or not my fur is actually real, please don’t forget to credit the designer HERMES. Thank You!

Kenneth Tong: Famous Or Infamous, It’s All The Same

And so it came to pass that Twitter ceased to be a fun and friendly way for ordinary citizens to communicate with celebrities, and became a tool for utter idiots to claim their fifteen minutes.

Our evolutionary cycle appears to be complete, people.
