Harry & William: Dropping The ‘H’ In HRH

Prince Harry was undoubtedly overjoyed – although a little startled – to receive a generous gift from his brother for his twenty-seventh birthday. His excitement was tempered slightly when he re-read the giftcard and realised he had been given two-hundred and fifty pheasants for shooting, and not the two-hundred and fifty peasants he had originally thought.

Floyd Mayweather vs. Larry Merchant: Over & Out

The boxing world is tying itself in knots this morning over a post-fight altercation between Floyd Mayweather and veteran HBO reporter Larry Merchant. Merchant, who is no stranger to controversy in the ring himself, repeatedly questioned the credibility of Mayweather’s fourth round knockout of former WBC champion Victor Ortiz, after the winning punch appeared to have been thrown before Ortiz was prepared.

While the video of an octogenarian offering out one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world is worth the entry fee alone, one can’t help but wonder whether the real sleight of hand here has been by HBO. Once again, the morning after a great boxing match, we’re talking about their coverage and their staff rather than the sportsmen who have trained for months for the bout.

No wonder the sport is struggling.

TV Review: To Catch A Predator

I had the misfortune to find myself watching a show called ‘To Catch A Predator’ last night. I realise that I am about three years too late to be critiquing this gem of a TV show, but I figure, if I hadn’t seen it, there must be others who need to be made aware of it’s magnificence.

It’s just too bloody hilarious to ignore.

Sorry To See: 9/11 Remembered Like This

It obviously hasn’t occurred to either the members of the English Defence League or the Islamic extremists who attended today’s 9/11 memorial service in London to shout at one another, that the higher ground might have been a better place to occupy.

9/11 – Commemoration Or Titillation?

As soon as it was discovered that there was film of the attacks on the World Trade Center, there was a certain inevitability about the manner in which the event was going to be commemorated.

Two days before the tenth anniversary, as I switch on my TV and surf my way through a number of programmes offering me the opportunity to watch the crashes again, either in real time, slo-mo, or even better, via CGI from the cockpit of one of the planes or indeed from inside the South Tower (my particular favourite), I can’t help but wonder whether what is essentially visual titillation is an appropriate way to pay our respects to all the people who died or were affected in the aftermath.

I’m not sure what’s worse. TV channel executives seeking to boost viewing figures by capitalising on a horrible tragedy, or those who watch it unfold again and again, eyes wide, fingers hovering over the pause button.

John Galliano: Free, But Not Clear

John Galliano has been given a suspended €6000 fine after being found guilty on two counts of ‘making public insults based on origin, religion, race or ethnicity’. This follows allegations and a video recording that showed the designer repeatedly using offensive language towards a couple drinking in a Paris bar in February this year. A similar incident took place in October 2010.

Chaz Bono: Toxic Avenger

Chaz Bono appeared on Good Morning America today, defending himself from accusations by Fox News commentator, Dr Keith Ablow, that watching him perform on ‘Dancing With The Stars’ would be ‘toxic’ for children.

Dr Ablow was, of course, referring to Chaz’s transgender status as toxic. As in, ‘kids, don’t watch the scary lady-man on the TV because you’ll instantly be begging your parents for gender reassignment surgery for Christmas’, toxic.

You know what frightens me more than the idea of Cher’s kid blundering around a dancefloor in sequinned lycra? The fact that Dr Ablow is a best-selling author, as well as practicing adolescent and adult psychiatry. That, my friends, is effing petrifying.

Of course, if he’d had actually been referring to the act of simply ‘watching’ ‘Dancing With The Stars’ being toxic, he would’ve had my full, unequivocal backing.

Pity da fool.
