John Galliano: Go About Your Business. Nothing To See Here

The New York Post is claiming John Galliano was mocking Jewish Hasidic culture on Tuesday when he stepped out of a New York apartment building wearing a “parody of Jew attire“.  The British designer was banished from the fashion industry after a 2011 incident in which he reportedly insulted Jewish people and claimed to love Hitler, but has recently made a tentative return via a temporary residency at Oscar De La Renta’s New York studio.

While the New York Post are obviously trying to create a visual stir to outdo that presented by Galliano, their desire to whip up controversy is almost embarrassingly obvious beneath the facade. We can already comfortably assume from his career choice that clothes are fairly important to John Galliano, so it’s unlikely the outfit he chose was simply the first he tripped over  that day. He was making a provocative statement that he was hoping people would react to.

He doesn’t care whether it’s positive or negative. But perversely, by responding to it, the NY Post and other media outlets could be accused of casually trading off and diluting the Jewish community’s right to be offended by genuine anti-Semitic gestures. This is not an anti-Semitic statement. I repeat, it’s a provocative statement. This is a fashion designer, the enfant terrible of the fashion world, using clothing to create a stir that will keep him in the news. That’s his job.

Perhaps the journalists at the NY Post should consider doing theirs.

“No, it’s all beef. I swear, it’s beef.”

What about behind that fence? They’re wallabies, aren’t they? Those, there.

“They’re cows. You see? This is what happens when bloody townies start interfering in things they don’t understand. They’re cows. Now get off my land.”

Can there be anything more traumatic than to see a childhood hero in later life and find they fail miserably to live up to expectation?

FEMEN: What Women Want

'The Grandmaster' Premiere - 63rd Berlinale International Film Festival

Apparently, every woman wants a red carpet moment. Those few seconds when eyes and lenses fall upon her alone, and she willingly sacrifices herself to the media scrutiny that will make or break her. She’ll spend weeks, months, selecting the clothing, jewellery, footwear, make-up, stance and words that will decide her fate, but ultimately she’ll have no control over how she’s interpreted.

It’s no wonder people don’t approve of FEMEN. They will keep reminding us that a few of the most fortunate women in the world looking pretty is infinitely more important to our sense of cultural wellbeing than the exploitation of the rest.

Danica Patrick: Egregious Easter Egg

Taken at face value, this ad is offensive to so many groups of people, it would be an exercise in futility to claim it as especially egregious towards any one of them in particular.

However, if you’re a feminist, bored and looking for a reason to be pissed off today, take a look at the woman introducing the model and the geek. She’s Danica Patrick, the most successful female racing driver in the history of the universe. She races on an equal footing with the guys and counts a fourth place in an Indy500 race as one of her biggest achievements to date.

She’s potentially one of the most positive role models young women have in society today – an object lesson in how self-belief, hard work and stubbornness can propel you straight on through those glass ceilings to the penthouse view of your choice. Which makes her decision to take part in such a moronic, outdated and genuinely embarrassing advertising campaign all the more depressing.

You think feminists are a bunch of miserable cows? With this kind of provocation, it’s hardly surprising, is it?

Prank Calls: The Last Resort Of The Comedically Challenged

If you have to resort to pranking unsuspecting victims to raise a laugh on your radio show, the chances are you don’t spend a great deal of time perusing the work of Robert K Merton, or more specifically his law of unintended consequence.

That’s ok though. A degree in Economics isn’t usually necessary for playing records and peppering the gaps in between with witty, crowd pleasing banter, although I must confess, I did take it for granted that at least a passing acquaintance with current affairs might be.

The Argument For Gun Control: In Pictures

As we know, it’s tremendously convenient to portray supporters of the right to bear arms in the United States as intolerant, irresponsible right wing lunatics who’ll shoot your face off with an AK-47 if you even think about trying to pry it out of their hot, sweaty hand.
