Rolling Stone: What’s Wrong With This Picture?

o-ROLLING-STONE-TSARNAEV-570

If I was a parent, I like to think I would be less worried about Rolling Stone’s decision to put Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on their cover and more about bringing my kids up in a society so bereft of worthy, morally responsible authority figures that they’re forced to seek alternative heroes in unsuitable places, like the entertainment industry.

I’m not a parent though. So I probably won’t get involved.

USA: Forty Years On

This week in 1973: 32 people died after an arson attack on a New Orleans building housing the UpStairs Lounge – a gathering place for gay people. Despite the death toll,  the incident received little news coverage and a local pastor who held a memorial service for the victims was chastised by his bishop and received hate mail.

This week in 2013: The US Supreme Court rules the Defence of Marriage Act to be unconstitutional, ensuring that  married same-sex couples receive the same rights to federal benefits as heterosexual married couples. The right to marry was also restored to gay couples in California.

You’ve come a long way, baby.

World Cup 2014: Prostitutes, Politicians & The Privilege Of The Few

“I’m Happy Being A Prostitute.” & “I cannot go without a condom, my love.” Not ideal, but the message shouldn’t be lost. Image via christianpost.

A campaign encouraging prostitutes to protect themselves against sexually transmitted diseases has been withdrawn by the Brazilian Health Ministry after objections from religious groups, it has been reported.

That model’s alarm is feigned, surely? No one with actual boobs is going to be that scared of another pair of boobs, even if they’re attached to a FEMEN activist making an unscheduled appearance onstage at Germany’s Next Top Model.

Well, unless they’re a complete dimwit, in which case anything is possible.

Amanda Platell: Making A Splash

6f826_gty_computer_porn_mw_110707_wg

Amanda Platell being lowered into the vile, roiling pit that is internet child porn by the editors of the Daily Mail was one of the more enduring images of this weekend for me. Platell, who is an ex-advisor to William Hague, was obviously identified by Paul Dacre’s managerial minions as the intrepid journo most capable of traversing the darkest depths of humanity without getting permanent stains on her action pants, and traverse it she did, exposing herself to all manner of revolting videos to supply further ammunition to the paper’s contention that it’s the internet’s fault this kind of depravity exists.

Specifically Google’s.

Two-year-old Caroline Sparks is dead today. She was shot in the chest and killed by her five-year-old brother, Kristian, at their home in Burkesville, Kentucky. Cumberland County Coroner Gary White described the event as just one of those crazy accidents.”

pink_crickett_7275The above image is a screenshot of the ‘Kids Corner’ section on the Crickett website. Crickett are the manufacturers of ‘My First Rifle’ – a range of guns designed to appeal specifically to kids. They come in a selection of colours and matching  accessories are also available. Kristian Sparks was given one as a gift last year.
So yeah. It was an accident. But only in the same way that it’s an accident when someone has been riding Jäger-trains for 24 hours decides to drive to the food court for a burrito and smashes into a wall/nunnery/family saloon/bus taking excited kids to the zoo for the first time.

Charles Krafft: Porcelain Gods

Is this porcelain replica of an AK-47 any less beautiful than it was a few weeks ago? Is it any less thought provoking, challenging or inspiring?

It’s a question that is confounding the art world after it’s creator, Seattle ceramicist Charles Krafft, was ‘outed’ as a holocaust denier in an online journal. Prior to this, Krafft and his work, which also includes porcelain teapots in the shape of Adolf Hitler’s head and hand grenades, had been described as ‘ironic satire’.
