George Galloway: The Cat Who Got The Cream

Dear people who believe there is no hope and can’t find the strength to go on.

Strike A Match & Other Government Advice You Should Have Ignored

A petrol shortage? Hmm, draining the reserves we still have is going to help, isn’t it? Image: REUTERS/Darren Staples.

You know, we have no grounds to complain about a nanny state and media reporting thereon when we react like this to an impending fuel shortage. OK, so Francis Maude didn’t exactly help the situation by telling people to “fill a jerry can” and “keep it in your garage“, but seriously?

If Francis Maude then told you to then light a match and throw it into said garage, would you do that as well?

Tibet: The Burning Question

A still of a Tibetan protestor featured on a Students for a Free Tibet leaflet. Not shocking enough, apparently. Image via deccanchronicle.com.

Once the dust of the Twin Towers had settled over Manhattan, the photos of the missing pinned to fences had curled at the corners and the thrill of watching planes repeatedly crashing into buildings had given way to guilt, September 11th became an abstract arena for those of us not directly involved to explore the dark recesses of our minds.

What had it felt like to be in one of the buildings when a plane hit? To realise that the stairwells and elevators were out of service? To unconsciously move closer to windows as wisps of smoke drifted under doors and through ventilation shafts,  while all the time, the concrete and steel structure containing you shifts and moans from it’s fatal wounds?

How awful must it have been in there for jumping to be a better option?

Gene Simmons: No “Fake Bullshit”? Seriously?

Yes, and presumably that’s all your own hair too, Gene. Image via thegrio.com.

And the ‘Keepin’ It Real in Rock Award’ goes to Gene Simmons of Kiss, who has emerged from behind the clown make-up, disturbing tongue calisthenics and spangly costumes that defined his career, to slag off Rihanna for “being fake” and “using karaoke machines in her performances.

What’s the matter, Gene? You not liking this new fangled equality business, or sumthin’?

The Daily Mail: You Have To Give Them Credit (Even If They Don’t Return The Favour)

Image screen grabbed from the DM this morning at 11am this morning.

The internet is rife with accusations of plagiarism towards the Daily Mail newspaper. In the past couple of years, esteemed organs such as the New York Times, humble football blogs and seemingly everyone in-between has noted that articles published in the bible of Middle England have been based on pieces appearing elsewhere first, and in some cases, lifted word for word.

Without credit.

Sepp Blatter: Negotiation Tactics

Image: REUTERS/Agencia Brasil/Antonio Cruz via Daylife.

Here’s Sepp Blatter overseeing another massive carve up.

This time, the FIFA head honcho was in Brazil to meet president Dilma Rousseff, after claims that building work for the 2014 World Cup was behind schedule. He said negotiations went very well.

But then, if you ask him, so did his drive against racism in football.

The Cheltenham Festival: A View From The Trenches

How very… titillating. Image: REUTERS/Stefan Wermuth.

I’ve lived in Cheltenham for much of my life and therefore feel totally qualified to chip in on this whole ‘Cheltenham Festival/Massacre’ debate.

However, it should probably be noted that if I lived in Guatemala, I would still feel the need to stick my nose in. The faster internet connection I would invariably have if this was the case would merely encourage me.

Agent Provocateur: “Unlikely To Cause Major Offence” Unfortunately

I get that this is, as Agent Provocateur have stated in defence of their latest advertising campaign, is an homage to the Hammer horror movies of the 50’s & 60’s.

I also understand and accept that fashion, by it’s very definition, challenges and pushes the boundaries between eroticism and art, both in it’s construction and presentation.

But haven’t we challenged our boundary of tolerance towards implied violence towards women and their sexuality enough? Dragging what is essentially soft porn without a pay-off into the mainstream just doesn’t seem to be doing it for me anymore.

I guess the Advertising Standards Authority disagree.

Hearts, Minds & Moustaches: The Falklands War 30 Years On

David Cameron has much to fear from the influence of this man. And not just because of the quality of his moustache. Image: REUTERS/Gaston Brito.

I’ve been writing nothing but observations on US politics recently. Posting about the same subject repeatedly is frowned upon in the blogosphere, so I was devastated to realise all those years of study had gone to waste.

I dutifully set about locating an engaging story about UK based interests, only to discover that more or less the only thing I’d missed during my transatlantic travels was another argument over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. You know, the one that’s been going on for almost 30 years now.

Judy McIntyre: The Warning Signs Are There

Image: Sarah Phipps, The Oklahoman via newsok.

As bills and amendments to legislation that directly impinge upon a woman’s right to choose what she does with her own body continue to be passed in the US,  expect further outbreaks of civil disobedience from unexpected sources.

After Constance Johnson’s handwritten tweak to the Oklahoma Personhood Bill a few weeks ago, Senator Judy McIntyre (l) put her thoughts on the issue forward during a fetal personhood protest on Tuesday by posing with a placard she borrowed from an attendee.

The Republicans in Oklahoma backing this bill should be careful.  I don’t think these women have even got out of second gear yet.
